Homework: Genre and narrative analysis

Cherrybomb
I chose this film because I think its great. This clip shows the 3 main charaters, Malachy (Rupert Grint), Luke (Robert Sheehan) and Michelle (Kimberly Nixon).

Genre

This film is a Drama, as it focuses on the reletionships of the main characters as they go on a wild weekend after getting their GCSE results. The film has lots of dramatic moments that inspire pathos, like when Luke is shaking with anger and sadness, clutching his scraped knuckles after punching his father. It also has exciting moments like when they go for a joy ride in Malachy's dad's car.
There are lots of dramatic binary opposites in the film to:
-Malachy and Luke's family lives- Malachy comes from a large, loving family who are proud of him, whilst Luke's family is run by his uncaring, drug-dealing older brother who is in control of his drug dealing/adicted father.
-Michelle's wealth and class compared to Malachy's- Her father (James Nesbitt) owns the Titanic leisure centre so she lives in a big house, whilst Malachy works at Titanic, where he is sometimes made to wash her fathers car.

Narrative

Equilibrium: At the beginning of the film, Malachy and Luke are best friends. Malachy works at Titanic leisure centre and Luke lives with his brother. They are both independant and they like to go out and have a good time.

Disruption: Michelle moves to Belfast from London to live with her dad, who is Malachy's boss. Malachy and Luke both want her. At first, she is attracted to Luke's rebelleous, fun-attitude, but then she likes Malachy who, although the reletionship isn't serious, has deeper feelings for her (he actually likes her). The competition challanges their friendship as they go on a wild weekend to try to 'win' Michelle. It ends in tragedy when they throw a party at Titanic, Malachy and Michelle get together, Michelle's dad finds them in the morning and attacks Malachy, repeatedly punching him in the face. Luke then hits her dad in the head with a pole (twice), which kills him, in an attempt to stop him from hurting Malachy.

Resolution: Malachy tells Luke that he can run away if he wants to, but Luke doesn't which shows they have become responsible young men. They are taken away by the police (there is also a shot of Luke's brother being arrested) and the film is ended with clips of their police interviews, where they say how close they are as friends.

Characters

Princess: Michelle- a teenage girl who is not responsible, but loves to have fun
Hero: Malachy- a secretly caring young man, who also loves to have fun and take drugs recreationally, but is mature in some ways (his family is proud of him as he got A's in his exams)
Villain: Luke's brother- he's not a nice man, he neglects Luke and is abusive to his father
Princess’ father: Dave (Michelles Father) - he is quite neglectful to his daughter (he sleeps with her best friend), he dies angry at her, but he strugles to know what to do as a father, as Michell spent so long with her mother in a different country
Donor: Malachy’s dad- he does not give it to them, but they take his car
Helper: Luke- Malachy's best friend, he love to have fun to, but he fels let down by his dad and sometimes angry at Malachy for having a nice family. He feels that no-one cares about him, so he trys to have fun instead of trying to suceed
