Analysing how the trailer for POTC 4 targets the audience

I think that the Target audience for POTC is both male and females aged 14-30 as there are both strong male and female characters and also the family market as it is about pirates and is a Disney Film.

I think that this is a very effective trailer as it creates narrative enigmas (especially at the start when the screen would go to black between each shot and also suggests to the audience that, if they watch the film, their 4 'needs' will be met:
-Entertainment/ Diversion. The trailer shows the audience that it is an entertaining film by using epic pirate music, sword fight scenes and the character of Captain Jack to show how exciting it is. It is also a diversion from every day life because it is set in the past, in the Caribbean and with pirates.
-Surveillance/ Information. Admittedly, you don't get much information about pirates in the films, but you can see a bit. The audience gets to watch how the characters deal with new situations or reletionships.
-Personal Idenity. This is probley most clearly shown through Penelope Cruz's character, who is a strong and independant woman, is challanging stereotypes, so therefore she is a role model. Also, Captain Jack is an amazing character and I think he could be a role model too, as many younger kids want to grow up to be pirates.
-Personal reletionships. This is a must-see film, and the audience will be able to talk to their friends about it. Also, they may devleop a one-way reletionship with the characters. For example, they may become obsessed by Captain Jack or really don't like Blackbeard.
